Demi Lovato is making sure child influencers get the financial protection they deserve.
The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer met with California Governor Gavin Newsom this week, who signed two bills ensuring that children and teens who appear in online content are protected from financial abuse. According to Newom’s website, SB 764 (Padilla) would protect “minors who appear in monetized online content by requiring their parents or guardians to set aside a portion of the proceeds in a trust account (i.e. Establishing “economic and legal protection for child video bloggers”. Meanwhile, AB 1880 (Alanis) “expands the Coogan Act to include minors employed as content creators on online platforms such as YouTube.The Coogan Act has been in place for decades. The statutory scheme protects child performers and creators by ensuring that their employers hold at least 15 per cent of their gross income in trust until they reach adulthood.
“To build a better future for the next generation of child stars, we need protections in place for minors working in the digital space,” Lovato said in a press statement.
