Demystifying the unfriendly IB API

Interactive Brokers(1) is one of the most complete brokers and is used by many large investors. Keep in mind that its trading platform is not beginner-friendly, but is aimed at experienced traders.
But that doesn’t matter to us. I would like to download historical data from it, but I have no intention of using the platform (at least not in a direct way). Use Python’s API instead.
That’s where it hurts. I’ve been coding and using APIs for years, but I’ve never seen one like Interactive Broker. I’m not sure if the problem is with the API, the documentation, or both. It’s difficult to learn how to use, and there aren’t many resources to help.
I managed to find some videos and learn from them, combining information from one with information from the other to achieve what I wanted to do. So, in a sense, this post is not discovering anything new, but rather combining information available through the Internet to facilitate the process of downloading data from IB’s API.
