Major markets (^DJI, ^GSPC, ^IXIC) are under pressure after the August employment report was released in line with economists’ expectations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 142,000 jobs added to the labor market in August, lower than the expected 165,000 as the economy continues to cool.
Meanwhile, the chip sector is also showing some movement. Broadcom (AVGO) stock is falling after its fourth-quarter outlook disappointed investors. Meanwhile, Qualcomm (QCOM) is reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring part of Intel’s (INTC) design business. The moves come as the Biden administration rolls out new export controls on chips, particularly targeting quantum computing and high-bandwidth chips, which are key components of AI.
