WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Japan and the United States have agreed to work closely together on currency markets, Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said on Wednesday after a meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
Mr. Suzuki told reporters about what was discussed during the bilateral talks, saying, “It is desirable for exchange rates to remain stable and reflect fundamentals, and Japan’s policy is that Japan will respond to excessive exchange rate fluctuations.” I explained my views.”
“I think our views have been well understood,” said Suzuki, who is in Washington to attend a meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and G20 financial leaders this week.
Asked whether Japan could intervene in the currency market to support the yen, he declined to comment.
Masato Kanda, Japan’s deputy international finance minister in charge of monetary policy, also told reporters that authorities would not rule out all options to deal with excessive yen movements.
Kanda said, “We always and frequently exchange opinions with other countries, and I think Japan’s position (on monetary policy) is well understood by the other countries.”
Asked about the possibility of joint intervention to curb the yen’s depreciation, Kanda declined to comment.
