PHOENIX — The City of Phoenix announced Friday its Neighborhood Park Enhancement Program.
The program will distribute $1.5 million to local neighborhood parks for improvements. Neighboring municipalities in each legislative district receive the funds.
From now until Nov. 8, neighborhood organizations can submit project proposals online.
“The Neighborhood Park Enhancement Program is more than just funding; it fosters local community engagement and develops park improvements that are most appropriate to the needs of individual communities and neighborhoods across the city,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said in a release. The aim is to adapt the “This investment is a strong step toward revitalizing neighborhoods and increasing access to great parks for all Phoenix residents to enjoy.”
The funding comes from the general obligation (GO) bond program passed by Phoenix voters on November 7, 2023. The bonds promise to fund parks, libraries, fire and police stations, affordable housing, roads, storm drains and more. .
To receive funding, the project must be located in a Phoenix park and the applicant must be an organization registered with the Department of Neighborhood Services. Organizations can register here. Projects that receive funding are expected to be notified early next year. The project is expected to be completed between 2024 and 2029.
“We are excited to launch this program and provide resources to enhance neighborhood parks,” Department of Parks and Recreation Director Cynthia Aguilar said in the release. “We believe these improvements will have a positive impact on the community and increase opportunities for residents to enjoy outdoor spaces. We look forward to innovative proposals that will enhance our parks and bring our communities together.” .”
What improvements could be made to the neighborhood park?
The City of Phoenix provides the following examples of how the funds could be used:
• Concrete ping pong table – $6,000
• Concrete Cornhole (2) – $3,000
• Foursquare – $8,000
• Ninja Step – $7,700
• Volleyball court reupholstery – $30-40,000.
• Basketball court resurfacing – $30-40,000.
• Ramada – $40-$80,000
• Exercise equipment – $15-$20,000.
• Bike rack – $1,170
• Steel table – $2,500
